The Birth of a Brilliant Idea in Sleeping Bag Innovation!
After some trial and error with the sewing machine and various prototypes, Tavis Malcolm, the founder, managed to create a sleeping bag that kept his kiddo warm, packed light, and was safe for his child to sleep in. He could have stopped there, relishing his innovative solution for his family. Instead, he chose to share this new creation with other like-minded camping and backpacking families who were struggling to find safe sleep solutions for their little ones.
In February 2019, Tavis launched a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign for the Little Mo Baby Sleeping Bag for ages 6-24 months. His brand, Morrison Outdoors, was quickly picked up by REI and other retailers for sale in their stores and online. Since then, the company has grown, now with four different sleeping bag sizes, three of which come in two different temperature rating options.
Giving Back
Within the first year of launching the Morrison Outdoors brand, they chose to join the Pledge 1% movement. This movement challenges companies to donate 1% of their revenue, product, or employee time (or all three) to support local nonprofit organizations. To date, they have supported organizations such as Make-a-Wish, Direct Relief, Operation Warm, OutGrown, Latino Outdoors, and others.
They also offer a trade-in program that allows customers to send in their used Morrison Outdoors sleeping bags in exchange for cash-back AND a discount code for a new sleeping bag. This program gives families a chance to size up at a lower cost while also providing used sleeping bags at a lower cost to other customers.
A Wide Selection of Sleeping Bags
As the brand has grown and expanded, they now offer four different sleeping bag sizes and two different temperature ratings. Below we will break down the features of each bag along with the benefits of choosing a Morrison Outdoors Sleeping Bag.
Features and Benefits of All Morrison Outdoors Sleeping Bags
There may be four different sizes, but there are some key features that apply to all of their sleeping bags. These features come with some convenient benefits to make your overnight outdoor adventures way more comfortable and enjoyable.
Sleeping Bags Sized Right to Keep Kids (and Adults) Warm
While you may be able to “size up” for some outdoor kid gear, this isn’t ideal for a sleeping bag. The extra space creates air pockets that trap in cold air. That means your child’s body is forced to heat a larger area to keep warm. This can leave your little ones feeling chilly despite the temperature rating on the bag since they aren’t nearly as efficient at regulating their body temperature compared to adults. Each Morrison Outdoors sleeping bag is sized specifically to reduce the extra space and keep your little ones toasty while sleeping outdoors.
Each bag also has some unique features to allow the wearer to adjust their level of warmth. The adjustable cuffs allow the wearer full use of their hands when needed or flip over to keep little fingers toasty warm. The footbox is enclosed and there is an insulated draft tube behind the zipper to prevent warm air from escaping. All sizes except the Little Mo have a 2-way zipper, allowing the wearer to release warmth when needed without removing the bag completely
Machine Washable Sleeping Bags
Camping is messy. Kids are even more so! Whether it’s sticky s’more hands and faces or a midnight diaper blowout, having an easy-to-clean piece of kid gear is essential. Thankfully, all of the Morrison Outdoors Sleeping Bags are machine washable (even the Down ones!). That means you can let your kids live their best super-messy lives, knowing you can simply pop their bag into the wash and be good to go for the next overnight adventure.
Sleeping Bags You Can Move Around In!
Kids (and many adults) are wiggle worms at night. The built-in arms of the sleeping bag prevent the wearer from slipping down into the bottom of the bag or slipping out completely while moving around at night. That means your little one won’t wake up constantly trying to readjust or pull their bag back on. The arms also allow little ones to feel less confined and have full arm motion through the night.
The Least Bulky Sleeping Bag Around!
Rather than dressing your baby in numerous layers and bulky sleep sacks, these bags allow you to dress them in normal sleepwear and stick them right into the bag for a comfortable night. The sleeping bag also stuffs down small into the included stuff sack, leaving more room in your pack or car for other essentials.
What is Better? Synthetic or Down for a Sleeping Bag?
All three of the child sleeping bag sizes are available in two options: synthetic or down (the adult bags are available in synthetic only). All bags have a shell material made of 100% Ripstop Nylon, but the filling makes a big difference based on weather conditions. To best choose which option is best for your family, let’s look at the differences between the two.
All of the synthetic sleeping bags are filled with a Hi-Loft Synthetic Insulation and have a comfortable temperature range of 40°-60°F (4°-15°C). These bags are best for car camping and backpacking in the summer (or warmer) months.
On the other hand, the down sleeping bag options are filled with 650 fill-power RDS-Certified White Duck Down and boast a comfortable temperature range of 20°-60°F (-6°-15°C). These bags are best used for 3-season camping along with backpacking.
Specifications and Extra Features By Size
Sized to perfectly fit the littlest campers, this sleeping bag is where it all started! It provides a great fit for babies from 6 – 18 months who weigh at least 15 pounds (6.8 kg) and are between 24 – 34 inches (61-86 cm) long. The inverted zipper zips up from the bottom to make diaper changes easier while ensuring that your little one doesn’t slip past the snug, soft collar during the night. Both fill options are 31 inches (80 cm) long, weighing only 14 ounces for the synthetic fill and 8.7 ounces for the down fill.
Even the pickiest of toddlers are sure to sleep well in this sleeping bag! It is best sized for toddlers from 18 – 36 months who are between 30 – 40 inches (76-101 cm) long. Both fill options are 38 inches (97 cm) long and weigh only 1 pound 2 ounces for the synthetic fill and 11.6 ounces for the down fill. Unlike the Little Mo, the Big Mo is built with a 2-way zipper so that toddlers can have a little more control over venting on warm nights along with getting in and out of the bag.
Your super-active, curious preschoolers are going to need a good night’s sleep after a day of adventure! The Mighty Mo will keep them comfy through the night so they can be well-rested and ready to go at the crack of dawn. This size is best for kids aged 3 – 5 years who are between 36 – 50 inches (91-116 cm) long. Both fill options are 46 inches (116 cm) long and weigh 1 pound 6 ounces for the synthetic fill and 14.6 ounces for the down fill. As with the Big Mo, there is a 2-way zipper to give kids control over airflow and getting in and out as needed.
As more and more families started reaping the benefits of sleeping bags made specifically for their little ones, parents started asking for one of their own. Enter the Mega Mo, made for adults who want to sleep like their kids. The Mega Mo is made with the same awesome features as the kiddo sizes (like the two-way zipper and adjustable cuffs) with a few adult-specific features thrown in.
There are two built-in pockets, perfect for holding drinks, flashlights, or just keeping hands warm. They also included a bottom zipper allowing you to vent on warm nights or shuffle to the campfire without removing the sleeping bag. While this bag is great for sleeping, the extra features allow the wearer to use it for everything from morning coffee on the porch to relaxing in the hammock on chilly days.
It comes in two size options: medium and large. The medium size is 62 inches (157cm) long, fits a person up to 5'10" (177cm), and weighs 2 lbs. 9 oz. The large size is 68 inches (172cm) long, fits a person up to 6'2" (188cm), and weighs 3 lbs. 4 oz.
