How to Source Grant Opportunities for your Outdoor School or Program

Published by Outdoor School Shop on Sep 27, 2024

Grants can be highly beneficial for outdoor oriented schools and programs, providing financial resources to support all different kinds of initiatives from curriculum development, outdoor space enhancement, teacher training, and supply purchases -- such as a bulk outerwear purchase to dress all students in the same, high functioning gear.

Nobody disputes that grants are a great solution for outdoor schools to use to bridge budget shortfalls, but the real question is how do you find them and then how do you make sure that your application is strong so that your program wins the grant? Outdoor School Shop is here to assist on both fronts! We have done a fair amount of research to track down some grants that speak to the needs of the outdoor schools we work with. The list following is by no means exhaustive. Rather, it should be considered your jumping-off point.

The VELA Founder Network

The application to join the VELA Founder Network and apply for a Micro grant is live! Micro grants are competitive grants of $2,500 or $10,000 awarded to entrepreneurs operating learning environments that serve as alternatives to conventional school, and to programs utilized by founders and families in the alternative schooling ecosystem. VELA funding is exclusively reserved for founders enabling families to pursue alternatives to conventional schooling as their primary learning experience. No child left inside  Washington State Applicants

"Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission's No Child Left Inside (NCLI) grant program provides quality opportunities for underserved, underrepresented, and historically excluded youth to learn, play, and experience the outdoors. The Washington State Legislature established the program in 2007 with two primary goals: to improve the overall academic performance, self-esteem, health, community involvement, and connection to nature for youth; and to empower local communities to engage youth in outdoor education and recreation experiences."

ABCs of Securing a Grant for your Outdoor Program

  • Research grant opportunities: Look for grant opportunities that are specifically designed for schools or nonprofit organizations working in the field of education, nature-based learning, or early childhood education. You can start your search online using grant databases like GrantWatch or GrantStation, which provide a comprehensive list of funding opportunities for different categories. You can also check with local foundations, corporations, or government agencies that may offer grants for nature-based education.
  • Narrow down your search: Once you have identified potential grant opportunities, review the eligibility criteria, application requirements, and deadlines. Make sure that the grant aligns with your goals and objectives for purchasing student outerwear, for instance, for your nature-based preschool or other type of outdoor school. Narrow down your search to grants that fit your specific needs and requirements.
  • Write a grant proposal: Once you have identified a suitable grant opportunity, start working on a grant proposal that outlines your need for funding, the specific gear you plan to purchase, and how it will enhance the quality of education and outdoor experiences for your preschoolers. Be sure to include information about your preschool's mission, the population you serve, and your track record of success in nature-based education. Follow the grant guidelines and instructions for formatting, length, and supporting documents.
  • Purchase Order to support your Grant Application: If you are applying for a grant to finance an outerwear gear purchase for your students, likely a pro forma purchase order will be required as part of your overall submission. Outdoor School Shop is happy to work with you to get this done and submitted!
  • Apply for the grant: Submit your grant proposal by the deadline and make sure to include all the required documentation and attachments. Be sure to follow up with the grantor to confirm receipt of your application and to inquire about the timeline for the selection process. If you are selected for funding, be sure to comply with the grant requirements, such as reporting and evaluation.
  • Explore other funding options: If you are not successful in securing a grant, consider other funding options such as crowdfunding, donations, or fundraising events. Reach out to local businesses, community organizations, and individuals who may be interested in supporting your nature-based preschool.

Other Tips and Tricks

  • When searching for grants, consider using online grant databases and resources specific to education or environmental funding opportunities. Additionally, reach out to local community foundations, education associations, and environmental organizations to inquire about potential grant opportunities for elementary outdoor education.
  • Remember to carefully review grant guidelines, eligibility criteria, and application deadlines to increase your chances of securing funding for your outdoor education program
