Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a merino wool base layer better than regular clothes under snow gear?
A good base layer is one of the easiest ways to make winter gear work better. Instead of putting cotton pajamas, leggings, or a sweatshirt directly under snow gear, the Taitoa gives kids a lightweight, warm first layer designed for active winter use. The merino wool provides warmth without a lot of bulk, making it easier to add a mid layer when needed and still move comfortably inside a snowsuit or snow pants.
Will the Taitoa feel itchy if my child is sensitive to wool?
This is one of our favorite things about the Taitoa. Although it uses merino wool for warmth, soft lyocell is positioned on the inside against your child's skin. That means kids get the benefits of merino wool on the outside without having the wool directly against their skin. It's a particularly appealing option for families who want wool in their winter layering system but have a child who is sensitive to how wool feels.
Is the Taitoa warm enough on its own, or does my child need another layer?
Think of the Taitoa as the foundation of the layering system, not the entire system. On a milder or very active day, the base layer underneath insulated outerwear may be enough. When temperatures drop, add a fleece, wool, or other insulating mid layer before putting on the weather-protective outer layer. This lets you adjust warmth based on the weather and your child's activity level instead of starting with bulky clothing every day.
Can my child wear the Taitoa for Outdoor School and skiing?
Yes. This is exactly the type of layer we like for kids spending extended time outside. The streamlined top and bottoms fit easily underneath snowsuits, snow pants, ski gear, and winter jackets without adding unnecessary bulk. It's a versatile set for Outdoor School, skiing, sledding, winter hiking, recess, and everyday snow play.
Do kids really need special base layers for winter?
For a quick trip outside, probably not. But when kids are spending hours outdoors, the layers underneath their coat and snow pants can make a big difference in comfort. We recommend starting with a proper base layer rather than cotton everyday clothing, then building warmth from there. The Taitoa makes that especially simple because you get the top and bottom together, creating an easy first layer families can reach for throughout the winter.
