Outerwear Ready for the Slopes

There’s nothing like a day on the slopes. Fresh snow, wide turns, and the freedom that comes with being outside in winter.

To help families prepare, we’ve built a Ski Shop with gear designed to keep young skiers warm, dry, and comfortable all day in the snow. Whether your child is just learning or confidently making their way down the hill, the right layers and outerwear make every run more enjoyable.

The good news is that many of the essentials for skiing or snowboarding are the same pieces already used for outdoor school days. Here’s a simple guide to the nine key items every kid needs for a fun and successful day on the mountain.

SHOP SKI COLLECTION

1. Hat
A warm hat is a must to keep kids' heads protected from the cold, especially under a helmet. Make sure it's snug and covers the ears. Opt for a wool or fleece-lined hat for extra warmth. For super cold days, add a helmet cover as well to keep the wind out and the kiddos warm.

2. Balaclava
A balaclava (or neck gaiter) is perfect for protecting faces and necks from the chilly wind. It's easy to pull up over the nose and ears when temperatures drop and is often lightweight enough to wear under a helmet.

3. Waterproof Ski Jacket & Snowpants / Snowsuit
A high-quality waterproof jacket and snow pants (or a full snowsuit) are essential for keeping kids dry, no matter how much snow or slush they play in. Look for insulated options to provide warmth without too much bulk.

4. Waterproof Gloves
Wet hands can ruin any outdoor experience. Waterproof, insulated gloves or mittens are key to keeping fingers warm and dry, even in wet snow conditions. Bonus if they have wrist straps to prevent losing them!

5. Snow Boots
Before hitting the slopes, kids need proper snow boots to keep their feet dry and comfortable when walking around off the snow. Choose boots with good insulation and traction to avoid slipping on icy patches.

6. Mid Layer for Cold Days
On extra chilly days, layering is key. A warm mid-layer, such as a fleece jacket or thin merino wool zipper jacket and pants, can be added under the ski jacket to provide an extra layer of warmth without making kids too bulky.

7. Base Layer to Wick Away Moisture
Wicking away sweat is just as important as staying warm. Base layers made from moisture-wicking materials like merino wool or synthetic fibers help keep kids dry and comfortable while they ski or snowboard.

8. Warm Socks
Thick, warm socks are a must for all-day warmth. Opt for wool or moisture-wicking socks that provide insulation while allowing feet to breathe. Avoid cotton, as it traps moisture and can cause discomfort.

9. Backpack and Water Bottle
Last but not least, a small backpack is perfect for carrying snacks, extra layers, or small personal items. A water bottle is also essential to stay hydrated throughout the day, especially at higher altitudes where dehydration is common.
