Master the layering technique

Outdoor days rarely stay the same from morning to afternoon, especially across different regions of the U.S. The goal is not one perfect jacket. It is smart layering. Start with a breathable base layer that manages sweat. Add a warm mid-layer that can come on and off easily. Finish with a waterproof outer layer that blocks wind and rain.
In the Pacific Northwest and Northeast, where rain and cool air often overlap, waterproof shells are essential year-round. In the Midwest, wide temperature swings make removable layers especially important. In warmer Southern regions, lighter layers with strong wind protection work better than heavy insulation. If kids are warm and dry, they can adjust as the day changes. Avoid heavy all-in-one coats for mild or mixed weather. Layers give kids flexibility and prevent overheating during active play.

BASE LAYER

Warmth starts here. A good base layer traps heat, wicks sweat, and keeps kids comfortable even after hours of movement.Wool base layers are our go-to! Warm even when damp and breathable.

PSA! Never use cotton as your base layer.

MID LAYER

This is the adjustable insulation layer. Fleece or technical fleece jacket and pants keep kids warm without bulk and can easily be removed if they warm up mid-day

OUTER LAYER

Dry kids stay comfortable. Period. Fully waterproof jackets and pants block wind, rain, so kids can stay outside longer. Depending on the temperature and activity level, they may need insulated layers on colder days or lightweight, unlined shells when it’s milder. The layers underneath do the real regulating, keeping kids warm when they’re standing still and preventing overheating when they’re running, climbing, and exploring.
