Quick overview: two different species of cicadas are “brooding,” or emerging from the ground in large groups, at the same time! Trillions of cicadas from the “Great Southern Brood” and “Northern Illinois Brood” will emerge as adults simultaneously across America for the first time since 1803. That’s 221 years ago! Scientists who study bugs, called entomologists, will get to learn more about how cicadas live, change over time, and fit into the ecosystem. This event has captured public interest because the rarity of the event, large numbers of cicadas, and noisy mating calls. It will be quite a spectacle of nature! Let's get the kids engaged, exploring, and learning!
